St Andrew's Cape Town is the mother church of Presbyterianism in South Africa. It was built with the assistance of the British Government as a Scottish Presbyterian Church and opened in 1828, a church for the Scottish community including the Scottish garrison in Cape Town which was very well represented in the church. As a result of the latter St Andrews is still the regimental church of the Cape Highlanders. Their roll of honour is kept there and their flags are laid up in the church. The war memorial in front of the church commemorates the dead of both world wars. St Andrew's has a beautiful organ, over 100 years old and provides two services every Sunday. An Afrikaans service at 9am and an English service at 10:30am. Every first Sunday of the month is a bilingual service at 9:30am followed by a social in the hall. In January 2007 the music academy of St Andrews was started which provides regular concert seasons, featuring the St George's singers, the C?? Tinta Barroca (?) orchestra and bringing many young soloists and musicians to the forefront all under the baton of Dr Barry Smith.
